In a time when people are weary of “fake news”, Buzzfeed just proved itself to be the fakest news of all fake news™.
Yesterday, Buzzfeed published accusations about President-elect Donald Trump’s alleged “deep ties to Russia”. The 35 page report alleged, among other things, that Russia possessed compromising information about Trump, which they intended to use to blackmail him. The memos, according to Buzzfeed, had been compiled by a person who claimed to be a former British intelligence official, and had been circulating around for quite a while.
Even Buzzfeed admitted right off the bat that the allegations were unproven and unfounded, and yet, chose to publish them anyway.
“A dossier, compiled by a person who has claimed to be a former British intelligence official, alleges Russia has compromising information on Trump. The allegations are unverified, and the report contains errors.” Buzzfeed wrote.
The documents had been making the rounds among news organisations and publications for quite some time now, each one of them (except Buzzfeed and CNN) refused to run the story because they knew it was fake.
The nature of the documents and its content were so absurd and far fetched that its depressing that anyone actually believed them. For example, page 2 of the documents alleged that Trump had visited a hotel in Moscow, where President Obama and his wife has stayed, and then had a team of prostitutes perform a “golden shower” urination show in front it him:
As people begun to doubt the integrity and validity of the documents, Buzzfeed’s editor in chief published a statement, trying to distant himself from the article; stating that they were “unverified allegations”:
There’s a good reason why no respectable journalist chose to run the story. Anyone who has spent more than a year on image boards, scrolling through the memos, could see how much this sounded like an elaborate troll…. and sure enough, it was. Last year, right before the documents begun circulating, a 4chan user had made posts on 4chan’s /pol/ board, about deliberately feeding the CIA false information.
Th original threads are all gone, but an archive of them exists, some of of them dating back to November 1st of last year:

About a week ago, we made a list of the 10 worst Feminist blogs online and put Buzzfeed in the 10th position. We would like to apologize for the error; Buzzfeed deserves to be in the top 5.
